Essentially you have to allow yourself to be torn in half or one third/two thirds or one quarter three quarters. If the Adversary lets Rick go, the Adversary lets Rick's book go which means, if you're the Adversary, part of you is going with Rick one way or the other trapped inside his book by the spell, even while you have traded to stay with Cerebus.
